When Students Lead
There’s something special that happens when students stop just attending church and start leading in it. I’ve been thinking a lot about that this week, mostly because we just wrapped up LTC—an event where our students don’t just sit and listen, but actively discover and use their spiritual gifts (see 1 Corinthians 12:4–7). And let me tell you, there is nothing quite like watching our students realize, “Wait… God can actually use me?” It’s like watching someone find out they’ve had superpowers this whole time—except instead of flying, they’re leading worship, teaching, serving, and stepping boldly into their faith (which, honestly, is just as impressive).
Youth leadership matters because the church isn’t just preparing students for future ministry—it’s inviting them into present ministry. Paul reminds Timothy, “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers…” (1 Timothy 4:12). That’s not just a nice encouragement—it’s a calling. When students lead, they bring energy, authenticity, and a willingness to step out in faith that can challenge the rest of us. They are learning to live out Ephesians 4:12, being equipped to do God’s work and build up the church. The body of Christ is strongest when every part—young and old—is engaged and growing together.
Plus, let’s be honest—when students lead, it’s just fun. It might be a little louder, a little more chaotic, and occasionally involve last-minute problem-solving (or snacks mysteriously disappearing), but it’s full of life. And that’s the point. The church should be alive, growing, and raising up the next generation of leaders who love Jesus and serve others boldly. Psalm 145:4 says, “Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts…”—and that’s exactly what’s happening. LTC was a reminder that these students aren’t just the church of tomorrow—they are a vital part of the church today. And if you listen closely, you might just hear God speaking through them… right in between the laughter and the noise.
