Seated at the King’s Table
Prime rib with horseradish sauce that was not too spicy and had a dash of sweetness. Creamy mashed potatoes. Seasoned grilled veggies. Salad with homemade dressing. Last week at the Equip conference, I was treated to this wonderful meal, and it made me remember the story of Mephibosheth and one of my favorite songs.
Mephibosheth was the son of David’s good friend, Jonathan (and the grandson of former King Saul.) When David became King of Israel, he asked, “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?” (2 Samuel 9:3)
Mephibosheth was lame in both feet and could not walk. He was living in someone else’s home, when the King’s servants showed up to take him to the royal palace. He must have been trembling before the King as he was set before him, wondering why he had been summoned.
Imagine his surprise when the King said, “I’m giving back all your grandfather’s land. I will appoint people to work that land so that you will be provided for. And one more thing...I loved your father and your grandfather. I would like for you to eat at my table with me and my sons, forever!”
When I think of God’s blessings, I think of God as the King who carries small, insignificant me to his table. He smiles at me and says, “You are my family, and I want you to be with me every day.”
If you have a moment, listen to the song “Carried To The Table” by Leeland. It captures this powerful act between David and Mephibosheth. As you listen, ask yourself how God has carried you to His table, and how you can bring others along.
“I was carried to the table
Seated where I don't belong
Carried to the table
Swept away by His love
And I don't see
My brokenness anymore
When I'm seated
At the table of the Lord
I'm carried to the table
The table of the Lord”
Blessings,
