“Welcome To The Family” Seminar
After hours of bumping along an African “bush” road (basically two small tire tracks) our Land Rover came to a stop in one of the many villages in the remote areas of Zambia. We had made the long drive on a Saturday so that my dad could preach (with an interpreter) on Sunday morning.
As we stretched our weary bodies, everyone came out of their mud/grass huts to get a glimpse of the American missionaries. The kids surrounded me and my siblings and used every English word they knew to establish a connection.
We were seated by a large fire and given refreshments. I still remember the feeling of the kids sneaking up behind me in the darkness to touch my long, straight hair. One family gave us their hut to sleep in, and the next day animals were slaughtered so that they could feed us a great lunch after worship. During worship, we were given the front seats (benches made of logs) in the open-air church structure. It’s hard to think of a time where I felt more welcome.
On Sunday, January 11th, 2026, Southwest will host a “Welcome To The Family” seminar given by Jon Reed. Jon has preached at the Hilltop Church of Christ in El Segundo, California for 27 years. His passion lies in the areas of hospitality and guest relations, and he credits God with growing their congregation from 30 to 300 based on one word, “Welcome.” (www.jonkreed.com)
Jon will teach a combined adult Bible class and preach that day, and then we will have lunch together and have several afternoon sessions, ending around 4 PM. The shepherds and ministry staff want to encourage all members to attend, so please block off your calendars for this event TODAY, and let’s begin 2026 with excitement about welcoming more people into our Southwest family!
Blessings,
Franklin
