A Window, a Mirror, and a Door
In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Paul reminds us of how valuable it is to spend time reading God’s Word. The Scriptures God has given us have the power to teach us important truths about God, rebuke us when we rebel against him, correct us when we have misconceptions or make honest mistakes, and train us to live the kind of life God calls us to live. The end result of dwelling in the Word and applying it to our lives is that we will be “thoroughly equipped” for the Kingdom work God has prepared for us. That is one of the reasons I am so passionate about teaching and preaching from God’s Word every week — I know how powerful and transformative it can be!
I’ve found it helpful to think about the Bible as a window, a mirror, and a door.
As a window, the Bible allows us to see into the heart of God. Passages like Exodus 34:6-7 help us understand who God is and what he is like.
As a mirror, the Bible helps us see ourselves more clearly — all our faults, failures, and selfish tendencies. It shines a lot on the ways we fall short of God’s glory and his plan for our lives.
And finally, as a door, the Bible invites us to get up and go out into the world in the name of Jesus. The point isn’t just to gain more information about God — it’s about putting things into practice.
So, the next time you read a passage in the Bible, think about a window, a mirror, and a door. What does this passage teach us about God and his plan for our lives (window)? What does it reveal about human beings like us (mirror)? And how is God calling me to carry these truths with me as I go out into the world (door)?
