Unity and the World Cup
For the past several weeks, the World Cup has captured the attention of millions of people around the globe. For 39 days, fans from different countries, cultures, languages, and backgrounds have gathered around one common love: the beautiful game. Stadiums have been filled with cheering crowds, homes have become watch parties, and complete strangers have celebrated incredible goals or comforted one another after heartbreaking losses. For a little while, many of the things that normally divide us have taken a back seat as we simply enjoy the game together.
Watching the World Cup has reminded me of something that should be true of God's people every day. Too often, Christians become known more for what divides us than for the One who unites us. We spend our time debating preferences, traditions, personalities, or secondary issues while forgetting that our identity is found first and foremost in Jesus Christ. The cross has always been greater than our differences. When we keep Christ at the center, we remember that we are one family, called to love one another and to point others to Him.
Jesus' final words to His followers were not to win arguments or defend personal preferences. They were to "go and make disciples of all the nations" (Matthew 28:19). Every moment we spend fighting among ourselves is a moment we are not fully investing in the mission Christ has given us. The world doesn't need another church known for its disagreements; it needs churches filled with people who genuinely love God, love one another, and faithfully share the hope of the gospel.
As the final whistle blows on another World Cup, my prayer is that we would carry forward something far more lasting than memories of great matches. May we remember that what unites us in Christ is infinitely greater than anything that could divide us. And as we stand together in that unity, may we joyfully fulfill the Great Commission, making disciples and pointing the world to the only King whose kingdom will never end.
